With it's city walls, which largely date from the Etruscan era and its Medieval buildings, Volterra makes a proud and warlike impression. This idea is reinforced by the fortress which rises up above the town, which the Florentines had built in the 15th century after they had conquered Volterra. The Piazza dei Priori, the centre of the town which is where the public buildings are located, is regarded as one of the most fabulous medieval squares in Tuscany.
